Really Big, Really!!
This year the Oak Lawn Band as in years past will be producing a number of Symphonic, Marching and Ensemble performances throughout the year. Starting in February, Mardi Gras comes early this year and we will be participating in the Oak Cliff Mardi Gras parade and perform a pop concert for Fat Tuesday.
This spring we will be performing an April Fool’s Day Concert (Really!) and in May we will be taking part in a Salute to Community Bands at University of Texas Arlington.
“Go West with a Twist”
But what is “Go West with a Twist”? This fall our band will be celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the Lesbian and Gay Band Association formed in 1982. The Oak Lawn Band is one of the original seven bands that formed this organization. As part of the celebration we will be hosting the International LGBA Conference here in Dallas which we appropriately named “Go West with a Twist”.
The Oak Lawn Band hosted the conference twice since it was formed. Back in 1986 and then again in 1993, the year LGBA first performed for President Clinton’s Inaugural. Conferences have grown significantly since then and we are expecting approx 250 musicians taking to the Dallas streets this fall for the Alan Ross Parade. We are also planning a massed band concert at the Majestic Theater on Saturday, September 15th at 7:30pm, with special guest the Turtle Creek Chorale.
Since it has been a number of years since we hosted LGBA here in Dallas, we want to show how much it has grown both in size and culturally.
Many of our friends think of Texas as the old west but we want to show them the new cosmopolitan side of Dallas including the Arts, Theater, and Music. This is the “Twist”, and then still celebrate our TexMex culture (food, music, and hospitality).
