The Oak Lawn Symphonic Band has an open membership policy with no audition requirements. We only ask that you have some familiarity and comfort with your instrument. Experience levels vary from high school band experience to band directors and seasoned professional musicians. The age range of the band also varies greatly from 18 to retired seniors.
We do require membership dues in the amount of $5.00/month with the first month of your membership free. Dues can be paid on a yearly basis in January at the rate of $55.00 – giving a one month discount. For full time students, a waiver of dues is available. In the event of other financial hardship, please speak to a board member for a waiver. We do not want to discourage your participation in the band because of dues.
We encourage all members to attend rehearsals regularly. Members who expect to play in a concert must attend a minimum of one rehearsal and the dress rehearsal prior to the concert. In addition, the artistic director makes final decisions about participation – both in concerts overall as well as on individual parts.
Rehearsals are currently held at Lang Middle School (DISD) 1678 Chenault, Dallas, Texas 75228 (map). Rehearsal is 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM.
Formal concert attire is typically as follows:
- Black shirt with collar
- Black slacks
- Black shoes and hosiery
OR
- Black concert dress or skirt/blouse
- Dark hosiery
- Black shoes
Informal concert attire for parades, pep band, etc may vary.
